JOB SUMMARY:
Working as part of a specialized team in a fast paced environment, the successful candidate in the role of Medical Laboratory Technician requires superior patient centered care skills, time management and organizational abilities. Reporting directly to the Scientific Director, the Medical Laboratory Technician works autonomously performing routine laboratory procedures in the andrology and blood analysis lab as well as participating in the maintaining of superior quality standards of practice, policies, and procedures at ONE Fertility. In addition, the Medical Laboratory Technician performs specialized diagnostic testing at ONE Fertility with the highest level of clinical quality, control, and research.
DUTIES:
o Demonstrates the ability to communicate in a superior manner with clients, families, and colleagues.
o Contributes to the team by sharing thoughtful opinions, assessing operational issues, and supporting mandated objectives.
o Reports all critical incidents in a timely manner to the Scientific Director and participates in continuous quality assessment and risk management on an ongoing basis.
o Works together as a team toward the goal of achieving total patient satisfaction.

Administration
The Medical Laboratory Technician works in partnership with ONE Fertility Administration.
o Participates in the development of policies, procedures, and standards, as they relate to laboratory procedures used in the treatment of infertility patients and their families.
o Assists with planning and implementation of changes within the assisted reproductive therapies service.
o Assists with preparation of quarterly reports and participates on appropriate committees.
o Performs the necessary procedures and documentation as prescribed by the Canadian Assisted Reproduction Registry (CARTR) and/or Health Canada for assisted conception services and procedures.
o Prepares for site visitation by Accreditation Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or any other body that ONE Fertility is required for certification and licensing.

Research and Teaching

o Engages in the advancement of scientific knowledge by participating in research-related activities.
o Identifies and researches ART questions through critical analysis and by using the scientific method.
o Works in collaboration with other trainees including fellows, residents, medical and graduate students.
o Assists in the training of new staff hired by ONE Fertility.

Professional Development
The Medical Laboratory Technician demonstrates an ongoing commitment for continuing professional self-development by;
o Participating in professional associations at regional, national, and international levels, and
o Maintaining clinical competence through the integration of practice, education and research within the specialty role.

Qualifications / Required Skills

QUALIFICATIONS:
o Ability to perform general laboratory techniques (e.g. processing of specimens, operation/trouble shooting of equipment, quality control procedures)
o Above average microscopy skills
o Above average manual dexterity, eyesight, and hand-to-eye co-ordination.
o Ability to properly assess specimens and select adequate processing procedures
o Ability to identify unusual specimens/situation for the referral to the Scientific Director
o Ability to work autonomously and as a team member
o Strong time management skill; ability to organize and set priorities
o Superior problem recognition and problem solving skills
o Ability to manage conflicting demands (e.g. unexpected procedure time changes, equipment availability)
o Above average computer application skills including proper use of the internet as an information/research tool. Familiar with OSCAR EMR an asset.
o Effective verbal, listening and written communication skills required
o Ability to work efficiently in a fast paced environment
o Knowledge of applicable hospital and departmental policies and legislation

Additional Information

EXPERIENCE:

o Minimum of two years of successful hands-on experience in an andrology clinical laboratory
o Thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of laboratory procedures, instruments, equipment and special techniques (on-the-job experience), in andrology is required

EDUCATION:

o Medical Laboratory Technologist (CMLTO or equivalent) and B.Sc., or M.Sc. in Biology/Physiology/Embryology
