The Mathias Gysler Award

The Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS) is proud to honour the memory and enduring legacy of Dr. Mathias Gysler through the creation of The Mathias Gysler Award.

Dr. Gysler was a highly respected and deeply compassionate physician whose dedication to reproductive health care left a lasting impact on patients, colleagues, and the broader fertility community. Throughout his career, Dr. Gysler was a passionate advocate for equitable access to fertility care, particularly for individuals and communities who often face systemic barriers in accessing treatment. His commitment to inclusivity and his advocacy for patients from marginalized backgrounds helped set a standard for compassionate, patient-centered care in Canada.

In addition to his clinical and advocacy work, Dr. Gysler took great pride in his European heritage and was a regular and enthusiastic attendee of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) annual meetings. These gatherings offered him opportunities to engage with international colleagues, share knowledge, and stay at the forefront of innovations in reproductive medicine.

Description of Award

In recognition of his exceptional contributions, CFAS has established The Mathias Gysler Award, which is presented annually to a CFAS member who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to:

  • Enhancing access to fertility treatment for underserved or underrepresented populations;

  • Increasing the potential for treatment success in individuals facing barriers to care;

  • Advancing equity and inclusivity within the field of reproductive health.

The award celebrates efforts that reflect Dr. Gysler’s values—compassion, innovation, and a deep sense of justice—and aims to inspire ongoing improvements in how reproductive care is delivered across Canada.

Award Details

  • Eligibility: Open to current CFAS members who have made measurable contributions in the areas described above.

  • Recognition: The recipient will receive a commemorative plaque and be recognized at the CFAS Annual Meeting.

  • Nomination Process: Details regarding the nomination process, including criteria and deadlines are available on the CFAS website under the given year Annual Meeting Page and will be shared with members via official communication channels.

Through this award, CFAS seeks not only to celebrate individual achievements but also to carry forward Dr. Gysler’s vision of a more inclusive and accessible reproductive health landscape for all Canadians.
