Job Summary
Reporting to the ART Scientific Director, the Embryologist 2 contributes to the Centre’s vision of becoming nationally recognized as Canada’s premier centre for academic and clinical reproductive medicine. The Embryologist provides specialized Human Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) to the Ottawa Fertility Centre by performing complex clinical procedures including: micromanipulation procedures on human eggs, cryopreservation and thawing of human embryos, eggs and sperm specimens, preparation of human sperm specimens for therapeutic procedures, performing in-vitro fertilization (IVF), and performing embryo transfers. The Embryologist also performs important quality control and research bioassays on human/animal gametes/embryos and ensures proper maintenance of lab equipment and supplies. As an important team member, the Embryologist contributes to the educational activities of the Centre and the improvement of laboratory services, procedures and standards.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field.
Experience:
• 2-3 years human embryology experience
Knowledge:
• Strong understanding and proven advanced skills in all aspects of human assisted reproductive technologies
• Ability to apply and adapt formal practices and current theories to daily practices
• Advanced knowledge of gamete biology, microscopy, tissue culture and micromanipulation techniques
• Knowledge of biological, chemical and physical safety procedures
• Knowledge of usual policies and procedures for an ART laboratory
• Knowledge and compliance with WHMIS
Skills and Abilities:
• Advanced and complex laboratory techniques (e.g. micromanipulation techniques)
• ICSI procedure
• Advanced microscopy skills
• Excellent manual dexterity, eyesight and hand-to–eye coordination
• Ability to properly evaluate gametes and embryos
• Ability to identify unusual situations, which require the attention of the Scientific Director or Business Manager of the Centre
• Analytical and problem solving skills
• Ability to organize, prioritise, make decisions and work independently
• Ability to manage conflicting demands (e.g. unexpected procedures time changes, equipment availability, space)
• Above average skills in computer applications (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software, database, statistical software, etc.) and proper use of the internet as a information/research tool
• Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in written format
• Training skills: willing to educate new colleagues
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
Salary: $40.03 - $46.42 per hour
