Job Description / Duties
Position Summary:
The Andrology Laboratory Manager is responsible for the operations and staff of the laboratory. The Manager will formulate and update laboratory policies and protocols and supports a robust program for quality management and improvement. The Manager will oversee the accreditation process and ensure that the laboratory is meeting operational standards.
Full time (1.0 FTE)
Location: Diagnostic Semen Laboratory, Regional Fertility Program, Calgary, Alberta
Laboratory Duties:
• Assist with carrying out Andrology procedures while supervising Andrology Laboratory personnel.
• Receive and process sperm, including cryopreservation after surgical retrieval.
• Conduct sperm analyses and sperm preparation for intrauterine insemination
• Draw blood work for IVF endocrine analysis.
• Supervise laboratory personnel in sampling handling and performing laboratory services in accordance with applicable guidelines, regulations and laws.
• Receive and maintain donor sperm inventory and documentation.
• Communication with clinic personnel, community medical professionals and patients.
• Maintain and verify laboratory equipment and materials inventory.
• Responsible for laboratory certification, accreditation, and inspections.
• Develops and maintains Quality Management and Improvement Systems as applicable to the laboratory.
Daily Team Support:
• Provide effective leadership with a focus on motivating, coaching and supporting the Andrology Laboratory personnel.
• Empower employees to handle operational challenges.
• Train, recruit and develop a successful team to meet established job expectations.
• Establish solid working relationships within the team and other departments to ensure a cohesive working environment.
• Carry out and lead by example at a high level all employee performance standards and expectations.
• Evaluate employee performance and provide feedback, coaching and formal evaluations.
• Ensure that employees adhere to all health and safety regulations.
Research Duties:
• Perform research reviews and evaluations and subsequent technique protocol modifications as necessary.
• Participate in research initiatives.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Qualifications/required skills:
• Graduate of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program.
• Minimum of five (5) years of related experience in human andrology.
• Minimum of three (3) years experience in a supervisory role, healthcare or medical environment.
• Masters degree in Medical or Biological Science or High Complexity Laboratory Director certification is preferred.
• Demonstrated competence in planning, implementing, coordinating and evaluating all laboratory operations.
• Competence in conducting research and quantitative analysis.
• Knowledge of quality assurance, inspection and accreditation procedures.
• Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proven ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Excellent time management skills, problem solving skills, ability to multi-task, prioritize work and strong attention to detail.
• Canadian resident or citizen, immediately eligible for employment in Canada.
** This position has a flexible schedule with the need to work weekends as needed to accommodate business needs.
Additional Information
Working Conditions:
• Interacts with chemicals, liquid nitrogen and biohazardous materials.
• Manual dexterity required to use laboratory equipment, desktop computer and microscope.
• Intermittent physical activity including standing, sitting and lifting.
