Hours (Subject to change) 37.5 hours per week; due to the leadership nature of the position applicants must be flexible to work additional/varied hours as required. Travel between 4+ sites is also required - currently Vaughan, North York, Toronto, and Mississauga.


The Clinical Leader at Mount Sinai Fertility (MSF) is an integral member of a leadership team consisting of a Medical Director, Scientific/Laboratory Director, and Managing Director; who together with other internal and external resources implements the mission, vision and values of Mount Sinai Fertility and the Sinai Health System. The Clinical Leader fosters a culture of continuous patient care excellence, quality improvement and operational excellence and is responsible for the direct management and oversight of clinical practice involving the departments of nursing, ultrasound and phlebotomy through four locations. The Clinical Leader will have a matrix reporting relationship to the Senior Director for Women's and Infants' Health and the Managing Director for MSF.


Roles and Responsibilities

1. Participates in the strategic planning process at MSF to drive positive change through innovations in programming and organizational development by:
a. Leading the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of services within the portfolio
b. Identifying opportunities for improvement
c. Collecting and analyzing relevant data to support strategic and operational planning
d. Seeking best practices from both internal and external resources so as to promote a culture of continuous improvement
e. Leading and participating in the programmatic development of the clinical area, preparing necessary business cases and care pathways as required
f. Engaging employees to ensure alignment between employees and strategic priorities

2. Leads the fertility nursing, ultrasound, and phlebotomy teams to ensure the seamless delivery of safe, high quality fertility care to MSF patients by:
a. Recruiting, developing and managing employees within the respective groups
b. Working with Team Leads to ensure effective and efficient coordination of work
c. Completing regular employee performance appraisals and supporting the development of learning plans
d. Supervising, scheduling, and coordinating the work of employees within the respective areas of responsibly
e. Working collaboratively with the Clinical Educator to ensure staff receive appropriate orientation, ongoing training and professional development
f. Implementing and encouraging staff participation in quality improvement/safety initiatives for the clinics
g. Developing and maintaining a valid and reliable workload measurement tool for assigned clinical areas
h. Foster effective labour relations through knowledgeable interpretation and implementation of collective agreements

3. Identifies, develops, and implements fertility and clinical services best practices with the aim of delivering outstanding quality, safety and patient experience by:
a. Fostering excellence and innovation in patient, family caregiver experience and outcomes through the implementation of Sinai Health’s Academic Practice Strategy
b. Developing, implementing, maintaining and propagating all relevant clinical policies and standard operating procedures
c. Working with other members of the leadership team to support the implementation of evidence based practice and ensuring the dissemination of research findings to inform practice and improve patient outcomes
d. Working with the clinical and lab teams to effectively implement new services and treatment protocols
e. Working with the MSF team to implement a model of care that focuses on improving quality, safety and the patient experience
f. Working with the leadership team to ensure effective implementation of fertility clinic standards including those identified in Accreditation Canada Standards for Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) for Clinical Services and Leadership standards for small community-based organizations
g. Working collaboratively with the Leadership team to implement and monitor programs and activities related to quality, safety, risk and clinic development
h. Encouraging and participating in research and the utilization of research findings
i. Liaising with internal and external resources to identify and champion continuous improvement with respect to delivery of fertility care

4. Promotes a culture of safety, risk mitigation, quality, and service by:
a. Promoting and maintaining a safe patient care and work environment by assessing for and managing actual and potential risks through completion of safety audits, promoting staff accountability in workplace safety, and ensuring that adequate structures and processes are in place such as staffing, equipment, supplies, physical space, policies and procedures
b. In collaboration with the Quality Manager and Medical Lead establishes a quality improvement plan to ensure compliance with Fertility SOPs, Accreditation Canada Standards and Required Organizational Practices, and Sinai Health policies and procedures (e.g. dedication safety, use of PPE, hand hygiene, reprocessing of equipment between patient use, consistent positive patient identification, etc.)


5. Oversees the training and development of the clinical team to ensure they have the knowledge, skills, abilities and resources to deliver the highest standard of fertility care by:
a. Working with the Clinical Educator to implement effective orientation and training plans
b. Conducting regular competency reviews
c. Coaching and mentoring the clinical team
d. Ensuring staff and/or contract employees maintain required licensing and certifications to fulfill applicable standards or regulations
e. Maintaining standards of practice and management of patient care by creating an environment conducive to staff development and excellence in nursing and other allied practices
f. Supporting Sinai Health’s Academic Practice Strategy including the requirement for ongoing staff development and training of students from all healthcare disciplines
g. Providing leadership in fostering and promoting a collaborative practice environment that is based on mutual respect among all team members

6. Contributes to the development, implementation, and monitoring of the clinical operations budget by:
a. Developing an annual staffing budget that is aligned with the overall financial objectives of the organization
b. Developing a multi-year purchasing plan for clinical equipment
c. Identifying opportunities for more effective and efficient use of resources while maintaining high standards for quality, safety, and service

7. Ensure employees adhere to Occupational Health and Safety Standards (OHS), the OHS Act, and are in compliance with all applicable standards and regulations including those for Sinai Health

8. Performs other related duties as required including, but not limited to:
a. Participating as a member/leader of departmental and corporate committees and teams
b. Leading projects and initiatives that support the overall growth and development of MSF

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Current registration in good standing with College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
• Master’s degree or equivalent in a related discipline from an accredited educational institution preferred; Master of Science in Nursing an asset
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited educational institution
• A minimum of five years’ clinical experience (preferably in the field of Fertility) and 3 years’ of progressive senior leadership and administrative experience; preferably with multi-site accountabilities
• Applicants with proven equivalent and related education, training and experience may be considered
• Respected and progressive leader with the ability to inspire, motivate and develop a high performance team
• Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite; advanced understanding of the value of information technology and experience in the implementation and integration of strategies for systems and technologies
• Ability to use data in quality improvement e.g. control charts and statistical control; data sources (internal and external); appropriate linkage with appropriate internal/external databases to support QI/PI activities
• Demonstrated leadership in inter-professional practice, improvement science, patient safety principles, systems thinking, patient and family centred care, and project management
• Demonstrated knowledge of external context and drivers for Sinai Health System quality agenda: HQO, CPSI, Accreditation Canada, ISMP, PIDAC
• Knowledge of organizational structures and levers to achieve quality and patient safety outcomes
• Leadership experience in a unionized environment; ability to establish strong labour relations through knowledgeable interpretation and implementation of contracts and employee standards
• Proven experience successfully leading and facilitating change within multi-disciplinary teams
• Excellent decision making, problem recognition, problem solving, communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
• Ability to represent Sinai Health System externally in a professional and collegial manner
• Excellent ability to build and sustain strong collaborative relationships across functions and at all organizational levels
• Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of effective strategies to maximize interprofessional collaboration
• Proven ability to manage resources effectively
• Project management experience with the ability to prioritize and manage substantial projects/initiatives
• Flexible with the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, multitasking and dynamic team environment
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; professional, diplomatic and confident with a proven ability to work with individuals across all levels of the organization and external stakeholders
• Excellent organizational and time management skills with the proven ability to manage competing demands
• Models collaborative, cross-portfolio engagement to build consensus and create solutions to complex issues
• Experience leading and/or supporting program development initiatives that align departmental goals with organizational strategic direction
• Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution
• Program planning and evaluation methodology skills are an asset
• Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
