Job Description / Duties
JOB SUMMARY
The Embryologist provides specialized Human Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) services to the OFC including: assessing and processing gametes and embryos for therapeutic procedures, in-vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), other micromanipulation procedures, cryopreservation and warming procedures, embryo transfers, and quality control activities on human gametes and embryos. The Embryologist maintains accurate inventory of cryopreserved gametes and embryos, maintains laboratory instruments and consumables, and contributes to the ongoing improvement of laboratory services, procedures, and standards. The Embryologist also participates in research activities and collaborations related to human gametes and embryos. The Embryologist performs work in accordance with the laboratory standard operating policies and procedures and coordinates work within the team and with the clinical team on a rotation basis. The Embryologist adheres to safe and ethical laboratory practices.
Responsibilities and Duties
• Assessment and preparation of gametes for IVF and ICSI
• Execution of IVF and ICSI procedures
• Evaluation of fertilization and embryo growth
• Execution of embryo transfer procedures
• Execution of micromanipulation procedures
• Cryopreservation and warming/thawing of gametes and embryos
• Maintenance of an accurate inventory of cryopreserved gametes and embryos
• Maintenance of laboratory instruments and consumables
• Participation in ongoing improvement of laboratory services, procedures and standards
Qualifications / Required Skills
Qualifications and Experience
• Bachelor degree in biological sciences from an accredited tertiary educational institution
• A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in human ART in a high volume clinic preferred
• CFAS embryologist certification preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Strong knowledge of gamete and embryo biology, cryopreservation, micromanipulation, tissue culture and microscopy
• Skills in applying knowledge and current theories of gamete and embryo biology to daily practices
• Skills in applying and following standard operating procedures in daily practices
• Excellent manual dexterity, eyesight, hand-to-eye co-ordination and microscopy skills
• Skills in properly identifying and assessing specimens and selecting adequate processing procedures
• Skills in identifying unusual specimens/situations, which require the attention of the Lab Scientist
• Skills in performing general laboratory techniques, e.g. processing of specimens, operation/trouble shooting of equipment, quality control procedures
• Strong knowledge of quality and risk management, laboratory safety procedures and WHMIS
• Working knowledge of laws, regulations and guidelines pertaining to Assisted Human Reproduction
• Working knowledge of regulations pertaining to the transport of dangerous goods
• Working knowledge of regulations pertaining to the ethical conduct of research involving humans
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills
• Strong communication skills, both verbally and in written format
• Strong interpersonal and team work skills
• Strong ability to manage conflicting demands, e.g. unexpected procedures time changes, equipment availability, space
• Strong ability to organize, prioritize and work independently
• Strong training skills
• Above average skills in computer applications (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software, database, statistical software, etc.) and proper use of the internet as an information/research tool
Salary: $41.34 to $49.14
