Job Description / Duties
An exciting opportunity for a leadership role in a new location of a well established fertility center. Reporting to the Lab Director, the Lead Andrologist role provides specialized andrology services to the HFC team including: preparation of human sperm specimens for therapeutic procedures, cryopreservation of human sperm specimens, and diagnostic and quality control tests on human sperm specimens. The role is responsible for day-to-day andrology, maintenance of computer-generated logs and reports related to patient testing and billing, and other lab related duties. This role will require a leadership mindset and skillset, strong communication and team building skills.
The Andrologist maintains accurate inventory of cryopreserved sperm specimens, maintains laboratory instruments and consumables, and contributes to the ongoing improvement of laboratory services, procedures, and standards, and also participates in research activities, collaborations related to human sperm, and works in accordance with the laboratory standard operating policies and procedures in a team approach, and adheres to safe and ethical laboratory practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & FUNCTIONS:
• Provides andrology services, including semen analysis, IUI preparation and cryopreservation to clinical laboratory patients according to established procedures and protocols
• Correctly processes samples per established protocols for testing including required transportation and storage conditions, completion of requisition forms, and transmission of electronic data per protocol.
• Generates correct billing, charges, and payment information as required for laboratory services.
• Accurately and completely performs the billing audit without incident.
• Keeps work area clean and tidy at all times. Follows pathogen handling and disposal procedures per required Healthcare regulations and legislation.
• Participates in Quality Assurance activities as defined by laboratory management and quality team.
• Maintains confidentiality and appropriate behaviors to protect patient health information.
• Consistently protects computer access by locking or signing-off of computer programs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Required Skills
• Successful completion of a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences
• CFAS Andrologist certification, preferred
• 3+ years of prior experience in Andrology (sperm count, motility and morphology), specimen processing, and administrative and patient care duties.
• Skills in properly identifying and assessing specimens, selecting adequate processing procedures and following standard operating procedures in daily practices
• Skills in performing general laboratory techniques, e.g. processing of specimens, operation/trouble shooting of equipment, quality control procedures
• Working knowledge of quality and risk management, laboratory safety procedures and WHMIS
• Working knowledge of laws, regulations and guidelines pertaining to Assisted Human Reproduction, as well as Canadian, American and WHO andrology standards
• Working knowledge of regulations pertaining to the transport of dangerous goods
• Working knowledge of regulations pertaining to the ethical conduct of research involving humans
• Strong basic math and computer skills required, with a strong knowledge of related laboratory software preferred.
• Highly organized, with a strong ability to multi-task, prioritize, and have a strong attention to detail.
• Must have excellent communication skills and make it a priority to consistently communicate positively and professionally with all staff members and patients.
• Displays a positive attitude and flexibility in changing situations.
• Participates in identifying problems and suggesting solutions.
• Maintains Confidentiality for all patient and clinic information.
